Mobility Scooter Speed Potentiometers

The speed potentiometer, or speed pot, is used to adjust the speed at which your mobility scooter drives. Inside your scooter’s speed dial knob or lever, the speed pot tells your scooter how fast you want to go as you move the control. Without a speed potentiometer, your scooter won’t move or might be unpredictable.

If you’ve noticed that your mobility scooter won’t change speed, is erratic or jumpy, cuts out, has dead spots, or only runs at one speed, then it might be time to replace the speed pot. At Discount Scooters, we stock a range of speed potentiometer spares for various mobility scooter brands.

Mobility Scooter Speed Potentiometers FAQs

How do I change a mobility scooter speed potentiometer?

If your scooter’s speed pot is showing signs of wear and tear or malfunction, then the good news is that they are inexpensive and easy to replace.

The process for changing the speed pot is universal across most brands, but some may vary. Always check the user manual first. Turn your scooter off, remove the key, and disconnect the battery before starting.

Generally, replacing your speed pot can be done in these six simple steps:

1.Remove the tiller cover by unscrewing the front panel around the speed dial and carefully lift the plastic.2.Find the potentiometer under the speed control dial knob. It’s a small cylindrical component with two to three wires connected to it and a rotating shaft that attaches to the knob.3.Disconnect the wiring.4.Remove the potentiometer by unscrewing theretainingnut and slidingthe speed pot out.5.Install the new speed pot, tighten the retaining nut,and reconnect the wires as before.6.Refit the tiller panel, reconnect the battery, turn the scooter on,and slowly test that the speed control is smooth and thereareno jumping or dead spots.

Some brands like Pride Mobility and Kymco often use plug-and-play connectors that make it easier to replace the speed pot.
